Absent loved ones and reunion
Traditional meaning and context
Su Shi's Jiangchengzi frames a dream reunion with his deceased wife through long separation, a return home and wordless tears. The poem gives remembrance a vivid domestic scene without supplying spoken instructions from her. It does not make every absent-person dream a message.
MingSez’s reading
A reunion can give remembered closeness, longing or unease a particular scene. We pay attention to the encounter: shared activity, silence, conversation or disagreement. Bereavement, separation and ordinary distance remain different circumstances.
How the scene changes the meaning
An absent relative shares a meal with you and you feel warmth.
The shared activity can support a personal remembrance. Notice the memory it brings to mind.
An ex-partner asks you to return, but you feel uneasy.
Keep your unease alongside the request. The dream does not establish the other person's wishes or cancel your waking boundaries.
A question to take with you: What did the encounter let you experience, and how did you feel when it ended?
