Keep the person's real status distinct
Bereavement, separation and ordinary distance are different circumstances. Do not assume which one applies merely because someone is absent in a dream. Ask what happened in the scene: a conversation, a silent presence, an argument, or searching without finding.
Read a reunion in Su Shi’s dream lyric
Su Shi’s Jiangchengzi is titled as a dream record for the twentieth night of the first month in the yimao year. Its opening, “十年生死兩茫茫”, establishes a long separation by death before the dream begins. “夜來幽夢忽還鄉” then marks the turn into a return-home scene: a small window and someone arranging her hair. The domestic action makes the meeting particular; this is not an interchangeable apparition.
The meeting is silent: “相顧無言,惟有淚千行”. Read that against the earlier fear that, even if they met, the changed speaker might not be recognized. The lyric brings imagined distance and dream proximity together without supplying a spoken message. Adding instructions from the absent person would change the scene the poem actually gives us.
Finally locate “料得” and the moonlit pine-covered hill. This is an act of imagining at the close, distinct from the marked dream scene. Make three notes—separation before the dream, the wordless encounter, and the closing imagined place—and ask how each changes the others. That reads the lyric as an expression of remembrance, rather than treating it as a transcript of a conversation with the dead.
Do not turn a dream into an obligation
A dream alone does not require payment for a ritual, reconciliation, renewed contact or a major decision. You may choose a private note or remembrance if it suits you. Respect existing boundaries and consent in any waking relationship; the dream cannot speak for another person.
Compare examples
These fictional examples, written by MingSez, help you compare the scene, the feeling and a possible interpretation.
An absent relative sits with you at a meal; you feel warmth.
The warmth and shared meal may support a personal remembrance. There is no need to turn it into a literal message.
A question to explore: What memory does the meal bring back for you?
An ex-partner asks you to return, but you feel uneasy.
The dream records unease as well as the request. It does not reveal the ex-partner's wishes and does not cancel a boundary you have set.
A question to explore: What did you want in the dream, apart from what the other figure asked?
