Butterfly
Traditional meaning and context
In the Zhuangzi's famous butterfly passage, Zhuang Zhou dreams he is a butterfly and then questions the relation between the two identities. The passage is philosophical reflection on dreaming, waking and transformation, not a forecast attached to seeing a butterfly.
MingSez’s reading
The butterfly can invite a question about perspective: were you watching it or experiencing the dream as it? We use that difference to explore a change of viewpoint, without turning the image into a promise of transformation.
How the scene changes the meaning
You experience the dream as a butterfly.
The changed viewpoint is central. Notice which experiences felt possible from that position.
You simply watch a butterfly pass.
This is observation, not the identity reversal in the old story. Start with your own association with the encounter.
A question to take with you: Did the butterfly change who you were in the dream, or was it something you noticed?
