Should I Quit My Job? Liu Yao Cases on Leaving and Timing
By MingSez · Editorial direction: Tang ·
Leaving a job can promise relief while putting something valuable at risk. You may still be weighing the choice, or already be looking for a way out. In a Liu Yao reading, those starting points matter: the work and your position within it are examined separately.
Deciding to leave and choosing when are different questions
“Would leaving be right for me?” asks us to examine a choice. “When can I leave?” begins with an intended departure and asks about its conditions. A reading of the second question needs to be understood in that frame before you use it as advice about the first.
Liu Yao is a six-line casting method within the I Ching tradition. In the job readings here, Guan Gui, the employment role, represents the position being examined; Shi Yao, the Self line, represents the person in the matter. Branches and their elements describe relationships between these lines, while the casting month, day and moving lines show support, constraint and change. We explain the relationships that affect the choice, rather than treating the hexagram’s name as the answer.
Three job-change records, read in their own context
Qing Lan’s published accounts are summarised below. Feedback is author-reported, not independently verified.
Already leaving: the timing
November 20, 2016 — Gou → Jian. Qing Lan asked when to resign. Work was day-supported Wu Fire. Moving Hai Water matched the casting month and controlled Fire: he read that month as the departure window and reports resigning November 29.

Considering a move: why wait?
March 28, 2017 — Ding → Heng. A querent considered changing jobs. Work, Hai Water, held Self. Opposing Si Fire changed to Xu Earth. The author read burial as restraining the force separating her from work, advised waiting and reports she stayed.

A supported role: why stay?
April 28, 2017 — static Yi. Another querent asked whether to change jobs. Work, You Metal, lay concealed beneath Self, Chen Earth. Concealment did not remove support: Earth generated Metal, and the day matched You. The author advised staying and reports agreement.

A strong work line is only part of the reading
We give most weight to where support lands and whether a change can act. For an intended departure, a change acting against the employment role may describe an opening to leave. When weighing the choice itself, we also examine Self and the support the role retains. A supported position and a supported course of action are different parts of the reading.
For example, when a moving line changes into an element that generates its original element, this is returning generation: support comes back through that line’s own change. Earth can return support to a Metal Self line; Water can return support to a Wood work line. Those are different reasons to reconsider a choice. The teaching comparison below shows how they change our reading.
Does the change support you in moving, or return support to the work? What still constrains it? Counting favourable signs cannot answer those questions; the relationship between them is what gives the advice its meaning.
What a personal chart adds to the decision
A situation reading examines the course in front of you. A Zi Wei Dou Shu birth chart can add a personal focus. Here we use one part of a synthetic teaching profile: the Wealth Palace, read as a lens on resources and sustenance. Tian Tong sits there and receives annual Hua Lu in 2026. Hua Lu brings a traditional emphasis on increase and return; Tian Tong is associated with ease and enjoyment. Together, they direct our attention to what work gives back to everyday life.
For this example, we would compare usable time, daily support and transition costs alongside pay. Where a cast supports a move, that helps define the alternative worth pursuing. Where support returns to work, it helps us compare what the existing role can still offer. This is our application of the relationship, to be checked against the person’s actual priorities; the single star does not establish their income or an offer.
Explore the two teaching casts and their conditions
These are calculated teaching examples, using the same synthetic birth profile and question on October 5, 2026, under the You month and Ren Zi day. Different recorded coins produced the two casts. They are separate from the published accounts above and are not client stories.
Lu → Kui: change returns support to Self
Work is line 2, Mao Wood. The You Metal month controls Wood and opposes Mao, creating a month-break condition; Mao is also in this day’s void pair. The Zi Water day generates Wood, so the reading contains support alongside those constraints.
Self is line 5, Shen Metal, moving to Wei Earth. Earth generates Metal: returning generation supports Self through its own movement. With supported movement of Self and a constrained work line, we favour exploring a workable alternative. The alternative’s actual terms are still needed before giving notice.
Generation and returning generation
Kun → Feng: change returns support to Work
Work is line 3, Mao Wood, moving to Hai Water. Water generates Wood, so returning generation reaches the work role. Mao’s void and month-break conditions still need to be read with that movement; the source of support is not a promise that it is immediately usable.
Self is line 6, You Metal, with month support and no movement of its own. That support, read together with the changing work line and its void and month-break conditions, leads us to hold off on giving notice while comparing the existing role with a particular alternative. The judgement comes from the combination, rather than from a static Self line alone.
